Encourage One Another

Linda: Hey that's my ball! I was playing with it.

Sue: No, you weren't! It was laying right here.

Linda: I just laid it down for a minute. I was going to play with it again. I want to see if I can throw it real high in the air and catch it without letting it bounce.

Sue: You can't do that. You are so clumsy you will let it slip right out of your hands.

Linda: I might be able to do it if you'll just let me try.

Sue: All right here and you better not mess up. Anyone can do that simple thing.

Linda: (Throws ball up and misses catching it)

Sue: Ha-ha-ha I knew you couldn't catch it. I told you you're clumsy.

Think about this

Was Linda encouraged by Sue's remarks?
What could Sue have said to encourage Linda?
Do you tear others down or do you build them up by the words you say?
God wants us to encourage others (build others up) not make fun of them (tear them down).

Ways to Encourage One Another

  • If you see one of your classmates, brothers or sisters having trouble with a math problem or other subject
Don't say - That was so easy I don't see how you can't understand it
Do say - I know you can do it. I will help you. Let me show you how I figured it out
  • If you are on a baseball or other sports team
Don't say - you ran so slow you made us lose.
Do say - You did a good job. I know you tried your best.
  • If you see someone you know trying to draw a picture
Don't say - What is that suppose to be? It doesn't look at all like that
Do say - I like the way you did the sky. I like the colors you used. You're drawing has really improved
  • If someone you know is always forgetting things
Don't say - Can't you remember anything? Are you stupid?
Do say - This is how I try to remember things. Writing what you need to remember down on paper really helps.
  • If you are working with a group of kids
Don't say - Your idea won't work. We can't do it that way. That is a dumb idea.
Do say - Let's all work together. We can use everyones ideas. You have some real good ideas.

This week pay close attention to how you encourage others
God wants you to treat other people the same way you want to be treated.
