I own two pair of shoes. Only two? you ask. Yes. You see, I am disabled and, since it is my leg that is involved in my disability, I cannot wear the fancy heels and platforms popular in today's style. Instead, I wear a "flat".
The shoe I wear to town or to church is a running shoe, a popular make that gives comfort to my lower extremities.
The shoe I wear around the house is an old nurses' shoe designed for many miles of walking. And there have been many miles because the shoe is about fifteen years of age. The heels are frayed; they are split both at the toes and at the places where the foot bends. I hold onto them because they, too, still give comfort to my lower extremities.
Why am I telling you about my shoes? An unworthy subject, you say.
Perhaps. But consider this as I amble on. I have a house cat. I love that little creature and I believe she loves me. How can I tell? Because she loves to take her morning nap with her little head resting on one of my shoes which I have removed as I sit writing. Does she choose the newest shoe? Of course not. She choose the fifteen year old ragged worn out shoe that probably smells more like me. (Ugh!) Her nap appears to be extremely comfortable.
You have heard the saying, "Being with him is as comfortable as an old shoe"? If you have not heard the saying because you are young and some saying's do not always get passed along generation to generation, think now about a good friend or a favorite relative and realize the saying is certainly true.
Two thousand years ago Jesus came to earth, the man who was God, came down to earth from Heaven to let us get to know Him: "He who has seen me has seen the Father." John 14:19 and to sacrifice Himself for our sins": "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16
When God "gave" His son to the cross, He gave eternal life to all of us who believe in Him. In other words, when our earthly body dies, our Spirit lives on and goes to be with Jesus Christ.
Wouldn't you like to be comfortable with Him when you get there? Of Course you would. Accepting Him as your Savior opens the pages of the Book of Life to you but is only a first step to exceptional happiness.
Resolve now to lay your head upon His bosom and let Him become the friend who is so comfortable to be with that He is like the shoe for me and my cat.
Use your time here on earth to learn all you can of Him. Your anticipation will become so great, the synonym of anticipation will not only be "to look for" or to "wait" for, but will become one to the other synonyms: "to prepare oneself", "to long for", and to "hope on". (Random House Thesaurus, Third Edition)
Let knowing Jesus become your life's goal in the new millenium. You will surely find the ultimate in comfort.
Why is it that the dogs constantly get out of the fence? They have the security of food, water and shelter, yet they keep digging under the fence to get out.
It makes me think of my relationship with God. I seem to get out of fellowship with with God at times. God provides for me everything I could ever want, yet I find myself breaking my fellowship with Him. I get lax in my prayers, Bible Study and my time spent with Him. I know He is waiting for me to get back into fellowship with Him. I constantly wait for the dogs to return, and they always do. God waits for me to return to Him.
If I were to just stay in fellowship with God, I wouldn't have the worries, make the wrong choices or feel guilty. When the dogs get out, they usually get into trouble. They get cacti stuck in their fur, they hurt themselves and they get real thirsty from chasing animals. They can't wait to get home to get some water. They know it will be waiting for them. They usually come home when they are tired, hungry or thirsty and have had enough running around.
I know I can always go back to God, but if I stay close to Him, I won't miss out on important opportunities and a closer walk with Him. God is always there for us. I want to be there for Him, also, and want Him to use me anyway that He so chooses. If I stay in fellowship then He will be able to use me.
